Stanley Tasmania

Activities in Stanley Tasmania

The historic village of Stanley is beautifully situated within the panoramic vista of Tasmania’s remote North West. Nestled at the base of a sheer-sided bluff (The Nut) which sits at the apex of a stunning peninsula, Stanley is a major tourist destination within a greater community that harnesses elements of fascinating geographic, historic significance.

The Ship Inn Stanley, one of many remaining historic buildings in the quaint port town, was built by the grandfather of Tasmanian born Prime Minister, Joseph Lyons. Recognizing the lucrative opportunity of building such an establishment within the burgeoning town in the late 1800’s Lyon’s grandfather unknowingly began what was to be a long and eventful story for the Inn which enjoys an unrivalled location within the township.

Backing onto The Nut, all that remains of an ancient volcanic plug, and offering exceptional views out across the bay, the Ship Inn Stanley takes advantage of its awe-inspiring aspect with the ancient Nut towering some 150 metres behind the Inn and dramatically contrasted by the open oceanic vista ahead.

The cottage where Joseph Lyons was born is now open to the public as a museum and is located right next door. Be sure to add this to your list of ‘places to visit’ and step back in time to experience the incredible collection of memorabilia and local history contained inside.

The township has many local attractions, ranging from the wonderful restaurants, wine bars, cafes and galleries to the historic Highfield House. With many beautiful walks on offer around the surrounding community you will find an abundance of outstanding scenery to photograph, capturing memories of your time here. Stanley is a photographer’s delight with its stunning beaches, quaint cottages, historic port and The Nut watching like an ancient sentinel over the village.

Further afield explore the Tarkine Wilderness and Edge Of The World, or Cruise the Arthur River and explore Trowutta Arch and nearby Dip Falls. We are also a short drive to Boat Harbour with its stunning azure waters, and the Rocky Cape National Park.

Stanley is a wonderful base to begin your exploration of the stunning North West coast of Tasmania.
